The Blaze

The Blaze

As always, everything French duo The Blaze create is open to total interpretation. The ambiguity of their music and film alike is arguably what makes the band so alluring, constantly launching the viewer high onto a bed of complex human emotions. Consisting of cousins Guillaume and Jonathan Alric, both music producers and film directors, The Blaze followed their debut Territory EP (2017) with Heaven (2018) and their incredible video for their brand new single QUEENS in Sept 2018.

Live, The Blaze are simply put, outstanding. Having already played some of the world’s biggest festivals in 2018 - including Coachella, Primavera Sound, Parklife and many more… and Pitchfork Paris in 2017. The Blaze have also performed their first hard tickets tour North America (including sold out shows in New York – Knockdown Center and Montreal – MTELUS) fall 2018.

Princess Nokia

The shape-shifting emcee has been releasing music via YouTube and Soundcloud since she was in high school and catapulted herself to the next level with 1992 Deluxe—selling out venues across the globe and steadily gaining tens of millions of streams. A Girl Cried Red showcases another fully formed side of Destiny that still taps into the uncompromising feminist ideology of Princess Nokia, and will undoubtedly cement her place in the alternative underground as well as the hip-hop world.

The mixtape draws on influences as varied as the introverted acoustic sounds of Elliott Smith to the bombastic pop-punk energy of Paramore.

Kate Tempest

Kate Tempest

A searing talent that cuts across genres with her unique voice, Kate Tempest defies categorisation; playwright, musician, poet, novelist and spoken word artist. She was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for both her albums, for Best Female at the BRITS 2018,received the Ted Hughes Award, a Herald Angel Award for Brand New Ancients and nominated for the 2016 Costa Book Award for Poetry.

Influences range from Wu-Tang Clan, to modernist poetry, to Tracey Emin. Neil McCormick has described her as ‘Britain’s most acclaimed young performance poet, Tempest can dazzle with scansion and flow, cadence and rhymes, but crucially employs her verbal skills in the service of big ideas – about poverty, identity, consumerism – and strong emotions.’

Mano Le Tough

Mano Le Tough

The last few years have seen him make the proverbial “leap” and become a staple of the international DJ circuit. At this point, he’s just as comfortable banging it out at Berghain as he is playing uplifting jams at Panorama Bar, and that flexibility has noticeably intensified the demand for his DJ services. After cracking the top 20 of Resident Advisor’s annual DJ poll in 2013, he reached number 8 last year, and the Irish DJ shows no signs of slowing down in the years ahead.

Talos

Talos

Hailed by the Irish Times as “a spectacularly assured debut,” Talos' debut album was met with raves on both sides of the pond upon its release in 2017, with The Independent calling it “stunning” and the New York Times’ T Magazine praising the songs’ “taut, chilling complexity.” The record garnered love from BBC Radio 1, racked up more than 25 million streams on Spotify, made the shortlist for the prestigious RTÉ Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year.

For his next album - Far Out Dust , Talos knew he couldn’t rest on his laurels, and pushed himself to write some of his most expansive, exciting music to date. French and his longtime production partner Ross Dowling (James Vincent McMorrow, Bell X1) shouldered much of the instrumental load on the album, in addition to working with producers like Doug Schadt (Maggie Rogers, Wet), Valgeir Sigurðsson (Sigur Ros, Feist) and Damian Taylor (Bjork, Arcade Fire), who also contributed a number of mixes.

Dream Wife

Dream Wife

One of the most exhilarating live rock bands to emerge within the last few years, Dream Wife is more than just a band, Dream Wife is a way of life. You’ll struggle to find a tighter knit trio than Rakel Mjöll (vocals), Alice Go (guitar) and Bella Podpadec (bass). This band aren’t just about bashing out insanely good guitar bangers while worshipping at the twin altars of David Bowie and Madonna, they’re about creating a wonderful world to dive into headfirst - and everyone is invited along for the ride.

The band chose the name Dream Wife, not from the 1953 Hollywood rom-com, but for its wordplay - “It’s a commentary on the objectification of women; the 1950s American Dream stereotype package. Having the dream house, the dream car and the dream wife, we want to flip the script on that. Women aren’t objects; we don’t just fit into one mold.”

Get ready to fall under Dream Wife’s spell as they unleash their revved up riotous tracks into the solstice night at Body&Soul.

Soak

Soak

“I was so sure of myself when I was sixteen, so sure of what I was about, and I didn’t give a fuck. But when I finished touring I realised that I absolutely didn’t. I had no idea. When you’re on tour you get into a cycle of something, and in a way you’re growing but really you’re not because everything stays the same, everything stays constant. And then when I was finished I was like, I have no idea what anything is. So, I had a freak-out-moment, and I spent a year in that freak-out-moment, not knowing what was what anymore. It was scary.”

But how can anybody truly know themselves at just sixteen? The term ‘to come of age’ comes with so much baggage, so much expectation, with SOAK’s second album Grim Town, Bridie dissolves all assuredness, and we follow her on this empowering but often painful journey, clinging closely to the handrail.

Wyvern Lingo

Wyvern Lingo

Wyvern Lingo have been writing music together since they met at age 11, and their longstanding friendship is clear in their charm and synchronicity on stage. They originally bonded over hand-me-down albums of Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel along with the R’n’B of the 90s/00s that then dominated the radio. Their sound has matured and developed since their debut a few years ago, with an evolving maturity and razor precision audible in their stitching together of a tapestry of influences, all united by their chilling vocal harmonies.

Baikal

Baikal

The name Baikal comes from the words ‘Bai Kyul’, which translates as ‘rich lake’. Lake Baikal is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface fresh water, and at 1,642m, the deepest. It is also among the clearest of all lakes, and thought to be the world’s oldest at 25 million years.

Baikal resides in Berlin and makes multi-layered electronic music for the heart, mind and feet. Preferably all at the same time and on his imprint Maeve, a joint venture with Mano Le Tough and The Drifter.

Baikal’s existence lies in the idea that the music itself, the abstract experience and the emotions it provokes should tell enough of a story to entertain you as the listener, and that the persona behind the artist is of lesser importance.

Kiddy Smile (Live)

Kiddy Smile (Live)

Kiddy Smile was raised in a housing project in Rambouillet (Yvelines) to the southwest of Paris. His teenage years were rather rowdy, but he soon acquired a taste for dancing.

Before beginning his musical career, Kiddy Smile was a fashion stylist (a love passed on to him by his mother). Among his influences, he cites African-American genres such as gospel and hip-hop, 90s Chicago and Detroit music, the voguing movement and the New York house ballroom scene.

Through his events, dancers, music and videos, Kiddy embodies that culture where his skin color, love of fashion and homosexuality are fully embraced. His talent and extravagant nature brought him into the public eye and he became known as the ‘French Prince

of Voguing’. In 2016, he dropped two tracks, Teardrops In The Box and Let A B!tch Know, on english house label Defected & released his first album, One Trick Pony, in August 2018.

The Drifter

The Drifter

Mark Flynn AKA The Drifter hails from the picturesque seaside town of Greystones in County Wicklow, Ireland. An extraordinary number of electronic musicians have come from what is a relatively small geographical area with Mark being one of those shining lights.

Mark is a founding member of the Maeve label along with close friends Mano Le Tough and Baikal – the imprint, born in Berlin in 2012, has steered a slow and steady course through the years, releasing highly thought out and interesting electronic music. The alchemy of three label heads is in itself what makes the label so special and sees it continue to garner support across the board. So looking to the future, its clear that Mark doesn’t intend on slowing down anytime soon. Original work will see the light of day in 2019 while continuing to tour both solo and with his label mates, bringing Maeve Showcases to all parts of the globe. Marks passion and enthusiasm for what he does is clear, this coupled with his infectious positivity, leaves you wondering what heights the Drifter could reach.

Coely

Coely

Hip hop seldom comes as sunny and funky as Coely’s. Born and raised in Antwerp with a proud Congolese heritage, she simply can’t be pigeonholed into one particular box. Irresistible soul, R&B with steamy raps full of hooks, sick beats, a ton of street cred and the attitude to combine all the above still fails to give you a complete image of this extremely talented singer. But her tracks speak for themselves: catchy singles such as “Ain’t Chasing Pavements”, “My Tomorrow” and the new “Don’t Care” landed her support slots for artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and De La Soul. And not without reason: when Coely plays live, you’ve got no choice but to dance.

Laoise

Laoise

What draws us to LAOISE is her innate ability to experiment with her music and the characters, concepts and emotions she’s evokes and portrays in each track. Her brand of glittering yet gritty electro-pop incorporating elements of synth, indie and alternative pop is commanding, gutsy and beguiling. Taking her cues from the silky production of acts like Tove Styrke, Troye Sivan and MO, LAOISE draws on myriad influences but records, produces and releases her music completely independently. Selected as a RTÉ 2FM Radio ‘Rising Artist of 2018’, she’s been praised by musos across Ireland for her charisma and talent, certain to ripple through the crowds at Ballinlough.

Tulla Ceílí Band

Tulla Ceílí Band

Tulla Céilí Band was formed in 1946 (yes, 73 years ago!), when even the idea of a festival like Body & Soul would have been enough to get you excommunicated. When they started, no-one would have guessed that their unique sound would find a home in the hearts of many from Camden Town to Carnegie Hall, along with practically every dance hall and village throughout Ireland. Driven by youth, passion, enthusiasm, curiosity and, of course, a love of traditional music, their unplanned and turbulent journey has spanned seven incredible decades. Among the 50 or more members who have passed through it have been musicians like Michael Coleman, Hugh Gillespie, Joe Cooley, Willie Clancy, Paddy O'Brien, and Tony Mc Mahon. Legends in their own right, we can’t wait for them to evoke times of a bygone era at Body & Soul.

whenyoung

whenyoung

Few bands can boast the kind of striking musical identity as whenyoung. The trio, singer/bassist Aoife Power, guitarist Niall Burns, and drummer Andrew Flood, make some of alternative music’s most compelling new sounds; a soaring, stunning, but still singalong take on musical anthemia, that fuses the storyteller’s nature of their home country of Ireland with the effortless cool of the London scene they now call home. After bonding over cheap vodka and the sound of The Velvet Underground in their hometown Limerick, they began playing music together and moved to Dublin and later London, where they became whenyoung. 2018 was a landmark year for the young band, performing alongside Nick Cave and Sinead O'Connor at Shane McGowan’s birthday party, and playing support slots for Dream Wife, Declan McKenna and The Vaccines. On stage, whenyoung are stunning wall of noise, where Aoife’s dreamy, heart-in-the-mouth vocals fizzle over driving basslines and infectious guitar riffs.

The Murder Capital

Hotly tipped since their debut, Dublin five-piece The Murder Capital have already been featured as One to Watch in The Guardian’s eponymous 2019 list and included in NME’s 100 Essential New Artists for 2019. Hailing from all corners of Ireland, The Murder Capital are a post-punk band driven by the desire to affect cultural change and are at the vanguard of a neo-punk uprising in Ireland alongside Fontaines DC, Slaves and Shame. 2018 was a breakthrough year for the band, with their explosive live shows unleashing gritty, jagged and rage-filled performances on stages which could barely contain their uncompromising intensity.

Meltybrains?

Meltybrains?

While it is difficult to define the sound of the five piece under one specific genre, it’s of interest to note that all members are classically trained. Since 2012, Meltybrains? have been creating incredibly imaginative electronic soundscapes, as well as performing highly theatrical live shows with an infectious and incendiary energy. They have a fearless approach to their creative process, which leads to the creation of tracks that captivate the listener as there are endless possibilities to where a track will begin and end. Pure imagination is incredibly refreshing in a world of music that is bound by strict structure and harmony, and the music of these five talented musicians is certain to have a very different but powerful, moving effect on any scene it would accompany.

Thumper

One of the biggest buzzes at Hard Working Class Heroes 2018 was Thumper, a noise-pop quintet from Dublin who delivered bubblegum pop through a wall of sonic death. With a reputation for raucous and frenzied live shows, and penchant for howling feedback and pounding rhythm, each Thumper gig is an exercise in unpredictability. Not for the faint hearted!

The Clockworks

The Clockworks

Honest and authentic Indie-Punk telling stories of life as a young adult in 2019.

The Clockworks take the energy, ferocity and driving rhythms of early Punk and furnish this with angular guitar hooks. This forms the foundation for hip-hop inspired, machine gun vocals that spit out wry social commentaries which lie somewhere between Slaves, The Streets and The Smiths.

"This Galway band has been on the lips of everyone that matters this year. From seeing them tonight it is easy to see why. They are something the Irish music scene has been overdue for some time" - U&I

"The Clockworks illicit fond memories of blissful angst and attitude sorely missed in the industry today. They represent the very fabric of musical tenacity amid hordes of risk-less acts."- Pure M
