Mashrou' Leila

Mashrou' Leila

Emerging from Beirut’s underground indie scene, Mashrou' Leila has continued to carve out their own distinct space within Arabic pop. Singing in Arabic about political freedoms, LGBT right, race, religion and modern Arabic identity, they have crafted some of the most melancholic ballads and raucous anthems in contemporary alternative music. Mashrou’ Leila has performed to sold-out crowds worldwide, including Europe, Canada, North America, and the Middle East. They performed in the United States in Fall 2015, but this is the band’s first large-scale tour in the United States with their newest album. Mashrou’ Leila (pronounced Mashrou-ah-Layla) formed in Lebanon in 2008 against the backdrop of a conservative music scene and one that primarily consisted of pre-packaged pop music, which they felt failed to reflect the reality of their youth culture and the vibrant underground scene.

The band has released four albums to date: Mashrou’ Leila (2008), El Hal Romancy (2011), Raasük (2013), and Ibn El Leil (2015). Ibn El Leil brilliantly reinvents the sound of the band into the sound of contemporary Beirut.
