Making their Irish debut as part of Fever Ray’s Friday night curation, FAKA have been described as a cultural movement, with their shows combining sound live performance, video and photography. Created by Fela Gucci and Desire Marea, FAKA’s sound mixes South African sub-genre gqom with layered drums and house music influences, while in performance they use fashion as a protest, focusing on the themes of gender fluidity, masculinity and the gender queer experience. FAKA hope that their performances can act as a conduit to help attain a new reality for the black, queer South African community and to share their personal experiences. Their 2017 E.P. release Amaqhawe has only cemented their position as some of South Africa’s most daring, singular artists.
“Amaqhawe is a daring and catchy exploration of love, identity, and romance woven through tongue clicks and drum beats.” – The Fader
